Product Care

Product Care

Your Vantage jacket is a high performance piece of gear. It needs some extra attention to keep it performing at the highest level.

Please read through the care instructions below to ensure that you care for it properly:

Before Washing

  • Always wash your Vantage completely alone to prevent down migration.
  • Never wash your Vantage in a washing machine that has an agitator.
  • If you cannot follow either of these prior instructions you should hand wash your jacket using the detergent and drying process described below.

The Wash & Dry Process

  1. Use a mild detergent like Dreft (for babies) or Nikwax (for technical gear).
  2. Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash.
  3. Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse.
  4. Hang dry until the jacket is completely dry.
  5. Then loft and redistribute your down insulation in the dryer by running it for 10 minutes on low or no heat with 3 dryer balls.

How warm is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket?

The Vantage Alpine Down Jacket is designed for cold alpine conditions and can keep you comfortable between about 20°F and 55°F when used with a proper layering system. It is built for stationary use at high elevation, where wind exposure and low temperatures require maximum warmth for minimal weight.

What makes the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket warmer than other ultralight down jackets?

The Vantage uses 850 fill ExpeDRY™ down and Zero Stitch™ baffle construction, which reduces heat loss caused by sewn seams. The seamless baffles improve wind resistance by about 40% compared to traditional stitched-through jackets, helping retain body heat in exposed alpine environments.

Is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket windproof?

The jacket is not fully windproof, but the Zero Stitch™ 15D nylon shell and seamless baffle design significantly increase wind resistance, making it much warmer in windy conditions than typical ultralight down jackets.

What is ExpeDRY™ down and how is it different from regular down?

ExpeDRY™ down with Fuze nanogold technology dries faster and regains loft more quickly than traditional DWR-treated down. This means the insulation maintains warmth better in damp, cold, or high-humidity environments.

How much does the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket weigh?

The jacket weighs 15.2 oz in size Medium, making it one of the highest warmth-to-weight ratio down jackets designed for alpine and high-elevation use.

Is this jacket good for backpacking and ultralight hiking?

Yes. The Vantage Alpine Down Jacket was designed specifically for ultralight backpacking, alpine travel, late-season hunting, and high-elevation trips, where warmth, weight, and packability matter more than extra features.

Is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket a 3-season jacket?

It can be used in 3-season conditions, but it is not meant to replace a full winter parka. It is designed for cold mornings, high elevation, and stationary use, and works best when combined with a layering system.

How should the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket fit?

The jacket should fit loose enough to layer over base layers or insulation without compressing the down. A tight fit reduces loft and decreases warmth, so the Vantage is designed with room for proper layering.

Does the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket have waterproof fabric?

The shell fabric is water-resistant, wind-resistant, and dust-resistant, but it is not a waterproof rain jacket. It is designed to protect the down insulation from light moisture and wind while maintaining breathability.

Why does the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket not have pit zips?

The jacket was built with a focus on maximum warmth for the lowest possible weight. Removing extra features like pit zips reduces weight, increases durability, and improves thermal efficiency.

What temperatures is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket best for?

The jacket performs best in cold, dry, and windy environments, especially above treeline, during late season backpacking, alpine climbing, glassing, or basecamp use.

How much down fill is inside the jacket?

The Vantage contains approximately

  • 203 grams of 850 fill down in size Medium
  • 215 grams in size Large,
which provides high loft insulation for its weight.

What makes Zero Stitch™ construction better than sewn baffles?

Traditional stitched baffles create small holes where heat escapes.
Zero Stitch™ construction removes those seams, which helps:

  • Reduce heat loss
  • Improve wind resistance
  • Increase durability
  • Maintain loft longer
Is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket good for high altitude use?

Yes. The jacket was specifically designed for high elevation, exposed terrain, and cold stationary conditions, and has been tested in harsh environments including Alaska and the Rocky Mountains.

How do I wash the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket?

Machine wash cold using mild detergent, wash alone, and air dry. Proper cleaning helps maintain loft and performance of the down insulation.

Is the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket PFAS free?

Yes. The materials used in the jacket are PFAS free, while still providing water resistance and durability.

Who should use the Vantage Alpine Down Jacket?

This jacket is ideal for:

  • Ultralight backpackers
  • Alpine hikers
  • Hunters
  • Mountaineers
  • Cold weather campers
  • Anyone needing maximum warmth for minimal weight
  • 5 stars: 40 (73%)
  • 4 stars: 10 (18%)
  • 3 stars: 4 (7%)
  • 2 stars: 1 (2%)
  • 1 star: 0 (0%)

Would be PERFECT if there was a little more room in armpits.

Before I mention the cons, they seriously hooked it up with the fill loft and fill amount. Especially for the price.
I bought this jacket because I did the research and there is nothing out there that competes with the fill loft, fill amount, price, weight, and color suitable for hunting (you guys should add a coyote tan). Needed something slightly puffier than a lightweight puffer, but not huge, and this is it.

Now for the con. There's not enough room under the armpits. I'm 5'11'' 155lbs wearing size medium and it fits right in every other way except for the armpits. The fabric is choked up all the way up in my armpit. If your arms are in front of you like when driving or something the fabric gets tight and actually a little uncomfortable. I don't wear it when driving more than a short distance. I would be very wary if I was bigger.

I would buy a second one if they fixed this issue and came out with a color I could use to duck hunt in dried reeds, or big game in open country / dry grass.

Overall Awesome but If you have broad shoulders, you’ll feel it…

Please make a slight modification for guys with broader shoulders. Adjust the cut for more slack under the armpits and shoulder area so no pulling is felt in the armpit and front shoulder area during full range of motion.
5”9” 170 size L. If you modify, let me know and I’ll buy two!

The ultimate puffy

I spend a tremendous amount of time in the woods, especially during the fall, and often alone. It is common to see temperatures down near zero and I need a puffy to keep me dry and safe when I’m miles from a trailhead or a vehicle. The Vantage Alpine is a puffy that does it all. Lightweight, a roomy cut for fitting under over base layers and an outer fabric that does an excellent job of cutting the wind. I find it has the perfect balance of fill to keep you warm yet is lightweight and packs down well.

Awesome Jacket

I’m so excited to try out this jacket in cold temperatures. I live in Wisconsin and will definitely get a lot of use out of it especially on backpacking/hiking trips. I have so much clothing items from OV and they’ve never let me down once, I love everything I’ve ever gotten.

Absolutely awesome. I wore this jacket on a ski trip to Japan this year and was amazed at how warm I stayed while walking around in mid 20 degree temps.

Extremely warm jacket

Extremely warm jacket. Had to open it a little during 0 deg celcius and windy. After a wash, even following directions there was a LOT of migration of filling and I have not been able to test it since.

Move over Patagonia and Arcteryx

Best cold weather jacket I have ever owned. I knew I had to have this when it was introduced. I live in Michigan and wore this every day when I took my dog for a walk in the winter. It kept me toasty warm even when windy. I have a Nova UL for backpacking…this is my dedicated winter jacket!

No More Cold Nights In Camp

After 2 years of freezing in my UL down jacket (named after a low-talking spirit) I decided to upgrade to something that would actually keep me warm. Sure, the Vantage Alpine jacket is a few ounces heavier, but it really does the job. I can’t wait to use it this summer on my high elevation trips in the Sierra.

Great Jacket!

Great jacket, temperature ratings are accurate. When semi-active (walking), I am comfortable down to -10F with a shell and light base layer. Hood is great, love the adjustments. Zipper is a little finicky to detach. I don't like the waist cord coming into the pocket because sometimes I like to loosen it to ventilate but the drawstring hole into the pocket sends cold air onto hands (just a preference for me to have it external with pocket sealed). Great overall design, and love how light weight it is! Keep up the great work and please add a variety of colors.

I don’t know how folks don’t give this jacket 5 stars

I don’t know how folks don’t give this jacket 5 stars. I have used multiple other (kifaru, stone glacier, outdoor research) puffy jackets and this is the best for ultralight back country trips. I am more hunting oriented and this jacket seems fantastic. Loft is insane and the quality seems great to me and extremely wind proof. Not sure why people keep saying the outer face seems cheep or delicate. I would say it seems like it will hold up well enough (much more than the stone glacier, which a fly fart would poke an hole in). At the end of the day it’s a puffy jacket. If you’re hiking through the woods putting holes in it from branches you’re probably overheating and don’t know what you’re doing anyway.

I’m 6’3” and weigh 200lbs. Lanky build and the large tall is perfect. Tight enough to keep me warm. Loose enough to layer and long enough to cover my back when I sit or bend over.

For the price this jacket can’t be beat. Only qualm I have is a lack in interior breast phone pocket. But by no means a deal breaker. Time will tell how it holds up but still for the price it’s great. Buy one.

Great jacket. Some concern with zipper longevity.

I love the matte look, the fit, zero stitch, feel, just about everything. I’ve had zero issues with the zipper, and I know YKK is standard for quality in high end jackets, but just be aware the jacket is using what I feel is a very small zipper. I’m willing to bet OV believes they can save weight and not compromise on quality. But I don’t yet have total confidence that this zipper wont have an issue down the line. We’ll have to see. Still give it 5 stars because assuming this zipper holds up I love everything about the jacket.

Good jacket but two problems

I have a medium size alpine jacket and a novapro. The sleeves on the alpine are about an inch shorter which leaves wrists more exposed than I like and the elastic on the cuffs on the alpine are also looser that the novapro which let's cold air in. I was disappointed the alpine sleeves length and cuffs size wasn't the same as the novapro. Other then that it's a good jacket and I like it.

Move over other companies.

The only thing that could make this piece any better would be pit zips. I'm sure they have been discussed, and there are 2 camps on them but having more ventilation would make this jacket perfect in my opinion.Stellar as is!

Hasn’t arrived yet

Ordered the first of the month and hasn’t arrived yet. Best the post office could tell it may be in a shipping container in Utah. Tracking said it was in kc Not outdoor vitals fault, but I’m still without this and some other items for my lion trip next week. Might consider a different shipping service. But I hear this piece is the bomb.

Follow up, if you order from this company buy the insurance. It’s common for their packages not to make it to their destination and if you don’t have the insurance you are sol. I have ordered thousands of dollars worth of apparel and this is the only company that I have had issues with. The independent package insurance option should have been a clue for me. I’m sure it’s good equipment
