So, That's it. Let's go ahead and roll my interview with Mr. Bryce Newbold. All
[00:01:35] Tayson: right Bryce. I'm excited to have you back on the show. How's everything going for you?
[00:01:40] Bryce: Doing pretty good. How about you?
[00:01:42] Tayson: Doing well, definitely been enjoying the summer. That's slowly coming on on our area. But you've been getting out much or
[00:01:52] Bryce: honestly, no I don't I mean I did like a Day hike or something but I haven't been backpacking since we were all out in Utah but Man summer school blown here. We have an we're like not getting any rain and as it rained here and weaks and it's just super dry. So you guys are probably having the opposite effect out there. I'm imagining we've
[00:02:13] Tayson: been getting rain but it's it's most people haven't even been turning on their air conditioners yet which is my home. My boy were like that we're finally getting some some heat. It's supposed to hit get into the 80s this week, which is like the first like consistent time yet, so that's
[00:02:32] Bryce: crazy to me. It's seems like I just feel like you guys are in the desert, like it's 100 degrees, like, in May This is not what I would expect from that area. Yeah,
[00:02:42] Tayson: we're definitely high desert, right? And and where you came, you know, is, is more, I mean, that's, that's quite a bit lower than us. So no. Um, it's Like worse. I my office where I'm sitting right now is almost 6,000 feet so it's it's a little bit different than like Zion and and some of that area. So Anywho the good news is, it's starting to melt some snow off and we're able to get into the High Country just
[00:03:09] Bryce: now it's not even
[00:03:10] Tayson: melted yet. I like I'd pull out my phone and show you photos right now, but like we just went backpacking over the weekend. And at 9,000 feet, I had spikes on just walking through snow, the Lakes had ice on the top of them. I mean, it was, that's
[00:03:27] Bryce: crazy. It was an
[00:03:28] Tayson: ordeal but it was fun. It was like it's so green now. Yeah, I
[00:03:32] Bryce: was, I was thinking about you guys out there and like, well, we had to go through with snow and when we were hiking out there and I just, I thought for sure the snow at all be melted out there by now. Crazy.
[00:03:44] Tayson: Like, still up on the Peaks, anything North facing. It's for sure, just still just not even possible. Like, we were gonna go to the windows and it was like, no, not an option at this. Oh,
[00:03:54] Bryce: really?
[00:03:57] Tayson: It's been crazy. But yeah speaking of that though I guess let's let's talk a little bit about having you come out to Utah and kind of the trip we went on and then there's there's quite a few other things I'd love to dive into I saw you recently. Some new videos on the enchantments. Yep. And would love to new
[00:04:15] Bryce: edit, new edits, new edits old videos.
[00:04:18] Tayson: That
[00:04:20] Bryce: wouldn't have no need
[00:04:22] Tayson: to tell anyone that,
[00:04:22] Bryce: oh, my trust me, everybody's now. And I've been teasing all that footage for about a year now, but I'm, I'm getting back in the swing of things now. It's just, it's been a slow start to the year but We're we're getting back into it.
[00:04:36] Tayson: Good, good. Well, the beginning of may we brought you out here to do a little backpacking with us, we went and backpacked into the Western Zion National Park, which I like to kind of explain some of that to the audience and whatnot. But I really want to get your take on what it's like to come out west and specifically into like this this High Desert area that we have. But I think maybe let's let's start with just kind of describing the trail, the conditions and then kind of unpack, just your experience from that. So essentially and I was going to look this up but Essentially this trail that we are going to do it, is it is the Western of Zion. So if any of you don't know what Zion National Park is, definitely go
[00:05:23] Tayson: look that up for a start. But essentially we're backpacking in through a Wilderness section camping up above Zion, where we have all these expansive views of the terrain, and then dropping down into the main Canyon. The day before Bryce got there. We'd been actually, I've been checking like the week previous. And then, the day before, we went and checked, to see, if we were going to be able to even get to the trailhead due to the conditions that we were in. And unfortunately, we were not so that meant that we had to tack on another like six miles. I want to say to the start of this hike and so we had a large group with us and we had to do 14 miles if I remembering right on day one.
[00:06:06] Bryce: So, we okay.
[00:06:07] Tayson: 14 mi in. And specifically the five miles we added was was a lot of it was more uphill whereas the original was almost all downhill. So it definitely added to the day and terms of just exertion and kind of what was required. So then we slept the night up on the west rim in a back country site there and then the next day we dropped down and into the canyon. So that's kind of a quick quick and dirty of what the trip was exactly but would love to hear, I guess your perspective on this. You know, when we first when we first told you they're invited you to come out I guess to to getting onto the trail like what what were some of the thoughts you had going on?
[00:06:49] Bryce: Well, really, the the initial route that you guys had planned seemed like a pretty easy lower mileage hike, for two days, like you said, with the snow and everything, add in that little bit on. I mean, that was a solid solid day one but I mean, I'm always up for a challenge. So I was excited whenever we were attacking on Mi there just because, you know, I flew out there I wanted to do as much as I, you know, as much as you wanted to do and see as much of the country, you know, as I can. But man, every time I go out west, it's it's just so much different than out east. I don't want to say that. Everything out east is the same. I know the Appalachian Trail gets a lot of
[00:07:32] Bryce: black for just everybody says it's a green Town Hall but it is very similar and it's just way more diverse out out west. So um, can I
[00:07:43] Tayson: ask you a question about that? Yeah, yeah. So You know, getting to know you, you know learned you've you've done some Ultras, your Runner, which is always always good to know when you're taking someone new on trucks. It's like all right, they can, they can make the mileage, right? Typically they're you're in good condition but serious question. Period. Right by the way, how is the back doing doing good? Oh
[00:08:04] Bryce: yeah, that's good. Yeah, I want to just get an ultra a couple weeks ago. I did a 50 and went. Okay. I mean I'm not in the best shape or like I was before the back injury, but we're getting there.
[00:08:18] Tayson: Okay. Or 15,
[00:08:19] Bryce: Miler 50 miler was that wow it was flat. Okay.
[00:08:24] Tayson: It's been a couple hours and we're done.
[00:08:25] Bryce: No, I mean honestly I ran with a friend and we took it easy we just you know child down at the aid stations had a good old time but I mean I Recovered. Well, which, you know that
[00:08:37] Tayson: first? Is that your first since the back pain and the issues? Yeah.
[00:08:42] Bryce: And as far as like fast, like shorter speed races, I haven't done anything and I'm kind of scared to because that's really what made it flare up bad before. Well, we
[00:08:52] Tayson: talked a little bit about just like the recovery of of your back, right? And you know, It seemed like you were kind of thinking counterintuitively where you felt like running was maybe good for your back instead of bad, because like initially like you said, it might have caused the to get injured in the first place. And then you kind of took it easy, I'm curious just your perspective, or maybe for the listeners, because I think that's something that's super important. Is people understand that sometimes with an injury, it's not about just stopping everything, right? And I get a lot of fear for people that do kind of just go, like, completely stopped doing anything and everything for the, for the fear that like, maybe they won't recover, maybe they won't be able to rehab. Or
[00:09:35] Tayson: sometimes it's a little bit counterintuitive but sometimes, you know, the activities. Actually, what what fixes it, right? So I'm curious kind of your experience on what your thoughts are of as far as I go because you kind of did Stop doing anything. And then you change that up,
[00:09:50] Bryce: Yeah, I'm a firm believer, believer, and active recovery. So even a few days, after an ultra, I sometimes feel like I don't like my muscles and everything, don't really loose enough until I get that first like little short run in and it just kind of gets everything like all lubed up. And it just makes you feel a little bit better, but um, I'm trailing off here. What was the
[00:10:13] Tayson: question again? Well, I've just noticed in your cat climbing on our pack, in the back there. Look awesome.
[00:10:18] Bryce: You see him? Yeah. What is going on hacks on display, there is we'll
[00:10:24] Tayson: see if it stands. The oh my God. Kitty cat claw durability test here.
[00:10:29] Bryce: He's gonna take that camera down. Probably What's
[00:10:32] Tayson: good? You got the The furry thing on top there, the dead he
[00:10:37] Bryce: will see, he might give us a show for Lucky but this
[00:10:42] Tayson: would be great. Yeah,
[00:10:42] Bryce: active recovery it's just definitely something that I think is important. So if people don't know which honestly I haven't really even came out and said much about my back. A lot of people knew that I was having problems but what essentially was as I have a few herniated disc in my lower back and I was this close to having surgery last year. I was limping for months on end. I completely stopped running because I mean like hardly walk or get out of vehicles and whatever. and, anyway, I I put me on a course of Prednisone for a couple weeks and I really took the inflammation down and it It helped my back to where it was bearable again. Like, I've always had lower back pain because of the way, my spine is, but It's it
[00:11:32] Bryce: enabled me to get back into being active. So, before I cancel the surgery, I decided I'm gonna go out and start just slowly running again and you know, if it's okay, I'm Gonna Cancel surgery which Is what I ended up doing but just getting back into it slowly. I really had no problems and I mean coming off of something like that as bad as it was for me. I felt like you know, once I started getting my legs and everything back, used to run it again like Running is never helped or hurt my lower back, really? I think this injury wasn't really activity related or something. Like, you know, I was kind of born with or it was inevitable. That was going to happen at some point and probably will, again, in the future. But
[00:12:25] Bryce: yeah, I I feel so much better whenever I'm being active, like, just everything in my body is just it's just Looped up. It's just like easier to function and and do my job and everything. So I'm
[00:12:41] Tayson: yeah, no, I think I think that that story is something that I love to hear because I've had very similar experiences and in my personal life, it's like the times that I try to Do something like too big of a break, it just ends up being that. I'm, I'm not like fixing the problem and having to go and do the active recovery or kind of, yeah, on it. Anyways, To get to a position where I'm actually feeling better with whatever is injured. So nothing really important. Most
[00:13:11] Bryce: is lotion, like, I always think about a lot of times. I'll say that like, old people or older people that retire and then if they if they're not active or they don't do anything, they just start stiffening up and going downhill and I mean I run Ultra is with 670 year old men and women that are out there you know running with me like doing just fine and it's Act and being active, keeps you young? I'm a firm believer in that.
[00:13:42] Tayson: Yeah. I mean, there's and we're getting off on a tangent here, but yeah, we really did. I think there's a lot to like, sometimes you hear of people and this is again, personal experiences of like They? You know, retirees and stuff like that when they finish like like a Duty or task or something like that, how just quickly their health can decline? Because they they don't have like something to get up and do every day and just start, you know, physically and sometimes even mentally. So, yeah, I think a lot of times, you know, continuing to challenge your body, is, is the best solution, even though, like I get a lot of flack from people they're like, oh, you know, put in Crazy miles. Like you're just breaking down your body and you're just, you
[00:14:26] Tayson: know, you're gonna pay for that your body's aren't meant for it and I think they're maybe some truth to that like if you're an extreme Ultra athlete. But at least what I do. I don't feel Like that's like that's yeah,
[00:14:40] Bryce: I mean, yeah, if you're putting in a 100 miles a week, probably not, you know, everything's not going to hold out forever doing that. But, you know, if you're safe about it, I don't I don't think running a few marathon's, or if you all crazy year really will hurt you. You're just going to be in amazing shape, you know, for everything else.
[00:15:00] Tayson: So I'm gonna, I'm gonna back it up. All
[00:15:02] Bryce: right, back to the restroom,
[00:15:03] Tayson: talking about like green tunnel and Hiking. Yes, okay, that's right, so, that I kind of had this thought the other day, because we just really late snow and just kind of trying to pay attention to what hikers and and people are doing gear purchases Etc and just got thinking about this concept of well, like out west, it seems like a lot of what we preach is is I don't know, like making the most out of weekends and like, covering big miles so that you can make certain Loops or go visit this lake or something like that. In a, in a typical time frame where you have to go back to work, you know, or something like that, you know, the weekend, when you're out east. If I'm not saying they do, I'm saying if all
[00:15:49] Tayson: of the miles look the same in a hypothetical green tunnel. Is there really a push to like Do more miles, you know what I mean? Like, where is it? Just like Maybe it doesn't matter the number of miles, like if you're a weekend guy, you're not through hiking. Yeah. Even, like, you're not section hiking or trying like have this bigger goal, but like, you're just going out. Is there a lot less of a push to, like, cover miles or I don't think
[00:16:15] Bryce: so. I don't think there's less of a push and I mean, everybody that I backpack with out here, I mean, you know, we're all weekend Warriors, like none of us have really done any through bikes. And I don't know. Like, for me, I know me. Especially being like a, you know, an endurance athlete. I I get like a big adrenaline like hi. Not only from like camping and being out in the outdoors, but also the physical challenge of it. So, I always have this push to do more like, if I'm looking at a trail that I'm gonna plan go like, do here in Southern Ohio, and it's only like 10 miles overnight, or it like, I don't get the satisfaction. I feel like. So it's, there's always like this. yeah, I think of the word
[00:17:00] Bryce: you is just you get you're more satisfied when you when you put in more miles. And even though everything is Similar, you know, like the trails they vary, you know, Ohio gets a lot of flack for being not the best place for backpacking. But I mean, we do have Seen backpacking trails. And, you know, there's some cool little ponds and, you know, some overlooks nothing like you know what we saw on Zion? But yeah, it's I think it's just one of those things that Backpackers are probably the same like same out east as they are out. West, really? Yeah,
[00:17:37] Tayson: well that makes sense. I just, I thought I'd ask
[00:17:40] Bryce: that's a good question. Yeah. Because
[00:17:43] Tayson: I could kind of see it both ways, you know. Like, I'm like you like a lot of the, the joy that I get out of something is the journey. Not just the destination and whatnot. So, yeah,
[00:17:53] Bryce: that was it a lot more rewarding out west. When you get to see, you know, Angels landing and all the cool lakes you guys have out there. Yeah, look, I mean I love I don't mind it out here. I love backpacking out here. I always always do it as long as I live here, but I mean, it's just better out west everywhere.
[00:18:13] Tayson: Like I need to better. If I, you know, we were not. We were not providing any kind of substance to Bryce. He didn't actually see Angels Landing. He saw the destination. It's a feature called Angel's Landing. If you don't know Zion National Park just wanted to clarify you know just in case you want from Zion's National Park in the places there. Yeah
[00:18:36] Bryce: I
[00:18:38] Tayson: was thinking about that's somebody looking at Zion like You just talked about angels Landing. I'm back man. What kind of a trip? Did we go? Yeah.
[00:18:47] Bryce: No. So this is
[00:18:49] Tayson: your first time too this type of train right? You've been to Colorado High Country, you know. Yeah Rocky Mountains
[00:18:55] Bryce: and I did Canyonlands which was oh that's right to me similar. But yeah, not you know it's it's a lot different there and honestly with that experience I was expecting this to be a lot more Canyon landesk, you know, and it really wasn't the thing that really Kind of caught my eye right away, was the diversity of it. So I mean you guys have legit trees out there like and I was kind of taking in. Well, we're on top of the West for him there, you know? So this trees are old girls like massive. um, so just be the contrast between green and red and all the colors out there. So like there was like flowers and stuff too. I like I wasn't really expecting You know, to look like it did because I did
[00:19:44] Bryce: a little bit of research but I was like to go into Trails. You know when I you know, when I have a guy I'll go into Trails slightly unprepared just because I don't want to spoil it for myself. I really like the You know, the surprise of it like Angels landing, and I've seen it years ago, but I literally did not look up any pictures leading up this trip because I knew it would just be that much better if I, if I just, you know, let it not show itself to me, you know, I,
[00:20:14] Tayson: I couldn't agree more. Like there's a lot of times like when I know I'm gonna watch a specific movie. Let's say, like, I want to watch the trailer
[00:20:21] Bryce: so no. Absolutely. And
[00:20:24] Tayson: I think that's the other thing,
[00:20:24] Bryce: I'll cover it. Like it's a movie. I really, really want to see. I'll change the channel or turn it off or yeah, I am. I love going into movies, blind, but that's another topic.
[00:20:36] Tayson: Right? So we come out here. We get started on the trail like 10 a.m. start hiking. We've put you in some new gear, so you're less familiar with all of your gear, was there any apprehension around that?
[00:20:53] Bryce: No honestly. Okay. You know, maybe a more sane person would have been a little bit more nervous because that's like rule number one, you know, you don't take your gear or don't test your gear in the field, you, you know, you tested, before you go out. But, um, I was confident just because I know your company, I know you guys really put the, the R&D in and I just I just knew was gonna be good too because I I mean I knew what products you guys were gonna give to us to test and I mean, you know how much different kind of sleeping bag or a tent be, you know, it's like and and plus we were out there with I think we had 11 people 11 person group that camp that first night so
[00:21:40] Bryce: it's like we got support you know if something fails like we had it handled on that one or you guys did at least yeah you know my blood was on your hands. Yeah
[00:21:51] Tayson: I was jealous because you know we set you guys up with a lot of really like gear and then I was kind of the pack mule for like the group safety. So I was packing a bunch of extra water, Bunch actually some safety stuff and it was His more than you should. Yeah. I was looking at your packs a little bit jealous. I had to jump time. I like 60 liter pack and I haven't ran a 60 in a long time. But yeah, I mean, we get we get started out there. It's green. We I mean, for the most part we crossed a few snowbanks just had really good weather. I felt like Got about halfway through the day and got a little bit of rain. And, but other than that, it was, it was.
[00:22:38] Tayson: I mean, I don't know, I don't know what else to say about, like, the hike is just a lot of lot of good views. I mean, you kind of end on this big expansive top where you can see a lot of the country down below. Select the last mile is just incredibly pretty as you're getting into the campsite and then rolled into camp and and set up gear, right?
[00:22:59] Bryce: Yeah, that perfect, whether the temperature was great. I mean, like out there like, you know, next to no humidity from what I'm used to. I mean, it was, as you remember it was really muddy. Like we just had mud cakes sticking to the bottom of our shoes from
[00:23:14] Tayson: Hill. That was oh yeah,
[00:23:17] Bryce: they were it was slick and it rained on us a little bit just enough, you know, forced to test some, some rain gear out but yeah, they the views just kept getting better and better too that campsite was There. Like when you know, we Set up camp. You know, 11 of these 10 is campsite. And we went over to this overlooked. And man, that was That was a good good little John, a good campsite view. You know, that's something you don't get out east here. A lot is like really epic campsites, you know. So that's something that I always like, really appreciate out west is, you know, when you set up camp and you're like, just a short walk from like this, you know, better view than anywhere out east. Like, it's It was, it's,
[00:24:08] Bryce: it was really wonder remember. And then, you know, the next day I had no idea. It was blowing my mind and it kept getting better and better. I didn't realize we were just gonna straight drop down into the canyon and the whole ecosystem was going to be completely different from what we hiked in the first day.
[00:24:29] Tayson: Yeah, so it was cool
[00:24:30] Bryce: to like just stay up on that rim and enjoy that back country where there wasn't a ton of people. You know, we only passed a couple other hikers out there. Um which you know, being that close to a huge National Park. You know, you don't you're not right. I didn't expect to actually you know be the only one out there. Well then that's
[00:24:51] Tayson: yeah that's one of the benefits of what we did. Right is how to say like like it happened on this trip. It happened on this last weekend but like this last weekend, for instance, we were up at this Lake in Northern Utah, called White Pine Lake and there can be like 50, Backpackers Campers at this Lake on a Friday night. And when we were there, it was us and like two other individuals that were way far away from us. Because we're hiking in snow and we're going where people don't want, it wasn't super convenient, right? And same thing with this trip. Typically, every Backcountry side is booked, you know, like, we booked, we have to book those sites, super early, like, log on bookem as quick as we can. We get multiple people in our
[00:25:34] Tayson: office, like signed on to try to get permits when when we are going to attempt to go into design and then when we got there, like they're like do you want to switch campsites? Like we got all this, you know, like There's no one going because that Trailhead was too snowy to get to and all I wanted to tack on just that extra five six miles. So when we tacked that on, we basically get the backcountry to ourselves which, which is a really, which is a really neat thing, right? Yeah, that's one of those reasons where it's like, you know, as long as you're physically able to do that, you know, stay healthy training is possible and then and then, you know, obviously the the lighter weight gear you have or the the better or
[00:26:12] Tayson: whatever, you know that allows you to enables you to do that, it gives you those opportunities. So you know, even the sauce week like I just having a light regular base weight. We were able to throw snow shoes and cramp onto our pack and still, you know, bust out the 10 miles to get into this Lake. And then we have it to ourselves essentially. So just some things to think about, if you're listening, like, sometimes going in, not the Prime season allows you to have a completely different experience, and I think that's what we got. Was, no one was Up there. We basically had that that whole Mesa to ourselves. And you're just overlooking all of this country in Zion, that's literally a pot and impossible to see from anywhere, but the spot we're sitting.
[00:26:54] Tayson: Yeah, I think that was like, one of the coolest things I got out the map, and I was looking at. I'm like, you literally can't see any of these Canyons, any of them from anywhere else in Zion. Yeah, From Any Road, From Any Trail and see, I just sat there and just took it in. I got up the next morning and walked over to the same Edge and just sat there and ate my breakfast by myself. Just just, it was, it was super super unique for sure. So next day you survived the night and get up the next day and essentially we continue on. Yeah, I mean let's have you walk us through this next, okay. Yeah.
[00:27:32] Bryce: So Next day just feeling great, you know, and I know I slept good, you know, like the gear and everything was doing great. Like you mentioned, you know, being out there being able to tack on mileage with your physical ability and having lightweight gear, that was something. I was a little worried about with taking all this new gear was, I was thinking, like, you know, hope it's gonna be late, you know, because I got my, my normal Loadout, which, you know, I've been perfecting and switching things out for like, you know, a decade now. And it's like, I'm just gonna throw all that aside and take all this new stuff. And I mean, dude, my back was light, I mean, Here. Like I'm gonna talk about it more in other videos, but my pack was
[00:28:16] Bryce: late. I was super pleased with everything, but anyway, so we wake up on day two and we immediately just start getting Crazy views. Just our dropping down into the canyon and Man, it was just so much different than day one. I just kept taking my camera out and getting tons and tons of footage and then I forget how many miles it was but then we reach Angels Landing, which is the the little Day hike. I guess you could say that's very, very popular and that's when we really started seeing like big groups, people know. No other Backpackers I think we were probably the only ones there that had big backpacking bags. and, Yes. So it's oh man. So it's coming.
[00:29:04] Tayson: Yeah so
[00:29:05] Bryce: okay Angels Landing for people to don't know is once you're at like the base of where it starts Uphill climb, you can kind of see the Peak from where, but from where you start, you can see it. It looks like it's on a nice Edge. A lot of this client. Pretty much is a nice edge with 2000 foot drops on both sides of you. You know, and you have a metal cables, it's drilled or chains. They're drilled into the Rock and it's just daunting to say the least. So we're thinking about doing it and cloudstar rolling, and it's like, oh man, like we might not have the weather because this is literally a hike that you don't want to attempt. You know, in inclement weather, like if it's gonna thunderstorm like that's the last place
[00:29:54] Bryce: in the world, you want to be is up on top of that. Oh, grabbing a
[00:29:58] Tayson: metal. Yeah. And then slick country. Like, when people do this, it's a permitted hike now to do to do that. And like with our Backcountry permits, we we have the permits to do it but like you get on that trail at other times and what takes forever because it's it's like a, you know, it's not a wide Trail. It's it's you're holding onto a chain climbing and it's, it's sketchy to say the least and there's people that like do it and it will slow down. I mean, that's they, they had to permit it because because, you know, yeah. And then people get so scared that they just hang on to that chain and they won't let go of it. And so that's like well, how do you how Do you pass? And yeah, passing up
[00:30:38] Tayson: and forward and yeah, because it's it's that much of a knife said like I took a really cool photo of you like where I can see the drops on both sides as your Crossing. This this tiny little, you know neck which hopefully actually someone else took a better photo of your right there. Gonna be like the thumbnail of the song idea.
[00:30:55] Bryce: What
[00:30:56] Tayson: it's really, really Intent. So back back to the weather conditions. Yeah.
[00:31:01] Bryce: And so anyway, it starts sprinkling and we're thinking, you know, it it's just gonna be a quick little storm. Maybe so we're like, you know, literally way back and forth. What should we do is, should we not and in my head I'm thinking, if anybody's doing it I'm going with them because, you know, I might not ever be there again. Like, I mean, I, I don't get to that region of the country, like, like ever, you know, it's my first time. So it's like, I'm just thinking my head. I just blew all the way out here. You know, I'm doing it. If anybody is willing. So a few people, say back, but the majority of us, just went ahead and did it in in a little bit of rain. And we were kind of hustling
[00:31:46] Bryce: too because we weren't sure how bad it was going to be. It's not a super long hike, but we kind of wanted to, you know, did gonna get bad. We want to see how far we can get, but we are Passing tons of people coming down the whole time. We're going up. People are just coming down. and, I mean crazy. Like so so cool and I'm looking idiot carrying my camera on one hand because I just
[00:32:09] Tayson: I'm trying to do it all one handed and I think
[00:32:12] Bryce: a couple people help me holding it every now and then and I actually got to fit in my raincoat pocket but we're climbing up this thing and when we get to the very top which is I mean, unbelievable views. Nobody is up there. The rain has scared, everybody down and tasting. You know, you just kept telling me like you will never see this up here without any other people like ever again. You know, like the fact that like the weather looks scary enough that it scared everybody down, but we got up there. We just had the whole thing to ourselves in and we started once we went back down, it wasn't until we were like almost down to the bottom where it really started to get like blue skies again and people started coming back
[00:32:55] Bryce: up so we got to really experience that height like You know, way better than a lot of people because it's like he said, it's such a popular Trail and even though it's permitted there is still a fair amount of people down there at the bottom that of either, you know, did it or or just came down from it. So I mean those When you're looking down, 2000 feet, like that's something I didn't have never experienced like, I've seen some pretty steep views but I've never seen 2000 feet below my feet. You know what I mean?
[00:33:32] Tayson: Right?
[00:33:32] Bryce: So that was epic. I mean that was literally the cherry on top like I could go about go on about so many cool things about that whole weekend that whole hike, but finishing it at that hike, you know, with the adrenaline rush of like, you know, skipping up these rocks in the rain and I'm not like a rock, climber really, I'm not used to doing a lot of rock scrambles, so it's like, you know I mean I was I was getting a little shaky. You know, when we first started It's like, all right, let's go and then Sean, you know, he's running up it. I mean I was
[00:34:07] Tayson: getting nervous. We stopped halfway up because it started to sprinkle on us and we're like I don't know if we should go and there's like there's like some liability. So like I'm like someone turned the camera on so I can see this. You guys should turn around. Like yeah, you look like liability wise. I'm like this is this is
[00:34:24] Bryce: you're being a possible? Yes, try
[00:34:27] Tayson: again. And the next thing I know
[00:34:29] Bryce: they're back
[00:34:30] Tayson: on up and I'm like, holding on to the chain and it's wet and I'm like this didn't get like 25% more slippery or hold on. I got like a hundred percent more slippery and
[00:34:41] Bryce: I forgot about that. Yeah. And
[00:34:43] Tayson: so it
[00:34:44] Bryce: was really grippy. You know that Utah rock is grippy sits like that gives you some peace of mind. But yeah, that Shane when it's wet. I mean, it's just enough of, you know, an adrenaline Russia and, you know putting enough fear in me that when I got to the top, it was just such a high. Like, after that moment it was just like, I mean, my mood. I mean, I was already in a good mood but like, dude, that was epic. I can't
[00:35:10] Tayson: wait to put that footage
[00:35:12] Bryce: in a video. Yeah. And yeah, size it. And
[00:35:20] Tayson: Gather myself here. Permits
[00:35:25] Bryce: out there for people that don't know.
[00:35:26] Tayson: Oh man. But no, like like I've been up there a lot and it's constantly crowded constantly busy. And what I kept saying too is like it's not just about the people that aren't here and like the ability for our group to just have it completely to ourselves. We had like storm clouds rolling in that were just casting incredible light on the, on the situation. But also there was no squirrels Which which for those of you that have been up there, they are relentless on the very, very top. You're saying, oh yes, yes. Like so many people go up there. They sit down. They pull out food and they want to picnic
[00:36:03] Bryce: right there on the spot.
[00:36:05] Tayson: Yeah, yeah. And then the squirrels just come flying out and they're little Bandits man. So, I mean, it was just it couldn't have been better. I, I agree with that. Like that, even for someone who would be considered, local I don't I never imagined having a situation like that again in my life. It was yeah,
[00:36:25] Bryce: man. That's awesome.
[00:36:27] Tayson: So, so, yeah, I mean, we finished out that day, I can't remember mileage on that day. Probably I
[00:36:33] Bryce: know, totally. It was over 20 something miles, right?
[00:36:36] Tayson: I think he'd
[00:36:37] Bryce: like 23, something like that. Yeah,
[00:36:40] Tayson: it's gonna guess we did, like six or seven on the second day. So it sounds all.
[00:36:43] Bryce: Yeah, solid hike.
[00:36:45] Tayson: With the big group, right?
[00:36:46] Bryce: Yeah, we had like, so. So
[00:36:49] Tayson: we had 10 on trail and Tyler had to stay off because they wouldn't, they would not allow us to occupy two campsites and go over again if you remember that, but gotcha. Yeah, 10. 10 people six or seven of them were like, never hiked with us before type people. So bit of a gamble good
[00:37:06] Bryce: group, though. Like physically, we I mean, everybody was power hikers, you know, like there was not a weak link out there, like everybody was just Blazing the trail which you think like, you know, anytime you go hiking with a few people, you know, sometimes you got to go a little slow over somebody in the back, we know which is fine. You know, you're out there too, enjoy nature and whatever but I just can't get over the fact that we had that many people and had that many like physically able bodies. Yeah. Um, it was just really cool too, because we were from all over the country is really cool to get to know all them guys. And honestly, that's one thing that I don't have any regrets about the trip, but if I could change
[00:37:50] Bryce: anything, I wish we would have got one more day out there just because I feel like it takes me. you know, at least like another day to really get comfortable with people to, you know, really get to know them and and it would have been cool to, you know, just get to hang out for another day out there. Yeah,
[00:38:10] Tayson: yeah. About the time we're finishing up with some late-night ping. Pong is probably when you really got really. Got really. No. That's that's
[00:38:17] Bryce: literally what I thought. I'm like. Like, you know, you really building friendships and it's like, oh, now we gotta leave in the morning. But that was one thing too. I wanted to talk about is Like like I said, I hadn't ran for a while and I was getting back into running at this trip. So I really wasn't near my normal, physical ability going into this. So I mean, I was sober and it's not like the elevation was It wasn't like super crazy. I mean, maybe we did more than I than I remember. Because there was a lot of downhill that last day a lot, and
[00:38:51] Tayson: that makes you sore. Yeah, so I was
[00:38:54] Bryce: really sore, and, for just days after that, even when I got back to Ohio, I'm just thinking like, man. Like that trail kicked my butt and then I got to thinking. It's like, no it was the round, the world Extreme Paintball that we played for like three hours back at the Airbnb, like, I was so
[00:39:13] Tayson: Torah.
[00:39:17] Bryce: Hey man. That was
[00:39:18] Tayson: I believe it. That
[00:39:20] Bryce: was great fun. Now you were
[00:39:22] Tayson: you were getting it. I mean we were all going to it man. We were yeah.
[00:39:27] Bryce: Yeah, I get competitive. I play for keeps, you know?
[00:39:32] Tayson: oh, I saw, I saw Oh, what a good time, man. What a good time. So let me, let me ask you a few kind of follow-ups to this. Typically, anytime we do like a trip recap, which usually like we do it with guys in the office but I thought it'd be fun to to bring you on to do this trip recap. All ask a few questions. Such as you know, what was your favorite piece of gear on the trip? What was a piece of gear you either didn't like or would have left home, like you didn't use it in retrospect, you know, just as a kind of a thought process, we'll start, we'll start with those two. So I'm gonna go first, just go last and then I never then they'll choose my stuff. So,
[00:40:14] Tayson: for me it was I went back to. So I've been like rigorously testing the cs40 for, for a long time. So I went back to a 60 leadership shadowlight and I had to carry extra like I alluded to at the first just to help with groups safety. And, you know, for the most part, we work kind of acting as guides and bringing some extras. And so to me, I was just super happy to have a fully framed pack that could carry that much weight and carry comfortably over 14 miles. Which, which is the whole day. So to me, just just the pack was was probably my favorite piece of gear in the most critical piece of gear, I brought on on the trip. So As far as gear that I didn't like or maybe would
[00:40:59] Tayson: have left home in retrospect, I brought a tarp. So, because like the previously we've like, sat around camp and and you know, played cards or something like that group and This time, it just just wasn't necessary. So I like packed the tarp. I set up the tarp, you never said. So that's one of those
[00:41:20] Bryce: things that's like, if you don't have it, you know, you're gonna wish you did. Yeah, but yeah, I I get that. So
[00:41:28] Tayson: those are my two. How about nice?
[00:41:30] Bryce: Um, you know, it's hard not to pick the pack because you're, you know, you're using it 98% of your trip out there, you know, there's a lot of little piece of gear that you only use, for a short time, whether it be in the morning or night, the pack is, you know, on you the whole time. So it's kind of like not picking a quarterback for the Super Bowl MVP. You know what I mean? Yeah, but I mean the pack did great but the 40th tent. That was that was my number one for sure. I really enjoyed that. That was the thing that was most excited about coming out there. Like, before you even said that you were gonna like provide us with any gear in my head. I'm like, oh man. I hope. I
[00:42:15] Bryce: hope they hooked me up with one of those tents or I hope I get to test one out, and it didn't disappoint at all that tent is Is really nice. The thing that Stands out the most is like, how roomy it was for a one-person tent. That kind of seems like, it's not that big, but there's so much room inside like so it's got the two pole design once lower than the other. But In being someone that's like five foot eight, for me, then I think was a palace. It really had so much room for sitting up and and just hanging out in and even whenever we all caught her tonight and we all went back to our tents before I like got down, went to sleep, whatever I was like really moving around in.
[00:43:03] Bryce: There was kind of testing everything out changing my angles and just seeing how everything worked just playing with it. And Really, really nice. I I'm never been a huge fan of single wall tents. That's something that I always preach on my channel is how nice, you know, what, a dual layer tensor tents that have bug in or bug net layers, just to kind of have that little barrier, so you don't touch the moisture. On the wall of the tent with the 40s. That thing was so long in the way that you have a designed on the edges. Even when you're on, like a three inch sleeping pad with your big lofted sleeping pad or sleeping bag, on top of that, um, I wasn't close to touching those walls. So it's like, if that if there
[00:43:50] Bryce: was no condensation in it that night, but if there would have been That tent is big enough that I would have no concerns about, you know, soaking my gear as well as like, if I had my down puffy on in the winter or something, and in a lot of times that hood, you're rubbing it up against the wall and you're getting moisture all in it for one man shelter. Super roomy and it had other features that I won't really get into right now but it's just everything about it. I really like as far as gear That I would have left at home.
[00:44:26] Tayson: Yeah. I didn't. Like or would have left at home. Yeah. I
[00:44:31] Bryce: Don't know because truthfully, I used almost everything I brought. So in order to keep my pack like super light, just Because they like before every trip I'm like, I mean, I I sat in my room there and, like, packed for like, probably two hours, like, weighing pros and cons, and it's just part of fun. In backpacking, for me is seeing what you can take and how light you can take stuff. And I even had a scale in my room. I was waiting everything and I went minimal on clothing, which and I literally used probably every layer that I had, which was like, you know, the sign hoodie you guys provided us and then the The mid-layer was that the video or Ventus? The veterinario,
[00:45:21] Tayson: he could. Yeah which one that's what I
[00:45:23] Bryce: had. I had that combo and I I used all three of those when I got cold at night and You know, I actually thought of this in the past, I don't think there was really anything. I would have left at home. I had everything dialed in really solid on that trip.
[00:45:38] Tayson: Sweet choose worked out. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:45:42] Bryce: Awesome. I mean there's a trail Runners right? The shoes were beat like over 1000 miles on them but they don't
[00:45:49] Tayson: miles on you.
[00:45:51] Bryce: I'm sure those do. Yeah, I
[00:45:53] Tayson: wish that. You knew what it was like to be a big fatty like me because you would never ever get that kind of mileage. Dude, I would just destroy him.
[00:46:02] Bryce: Oh man,
[00:46:03] Tayson: yeah, I can't believe that.
[00:46:05] Bryce: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:46:07] Tayson: Okay. Um, I think we I mean, the other thing I was gonna ask the favorite part of the trip, but I think you you already nailed it with no Giants. yeah, I think that's a good cap on the Xeon side of things, but you recently. So for those of you haven't already, you should go subscribe to prices channel. So that when he eventually edits this this trip, you can see some of the views and be notified of of the trip because it'll be worth that. There's some awesome shots in there. So yeah,
[00:46:36] Bryce: yeah, great footage. But this is on provided, you know, I don't even I can't take credit for it. Like the the views are just there. It was it was not.
[00:46:47] Tayson: Yeah, so go check that out for sure. I I need to go watch your enchantments video that that's up on your Channel right now. That one looks, this looks really exceptional any other trips like upcoming for you at this point.
[00:47:02] Bryce: At this point know. So I Don't have anything like big planned. I think for the rest of the year, to be honest, but I am gonna do some local stuff here. And I'm gonna do a little trip in West Virginia. Over like Fourth of July weekend or maybe towards the end of The Weeknd rolling into the week. So that's when the next trip I have line up. And I'd really like to get out to one or two left little local, Ohio Trails. I have a couple like Pacific Heights. I want to do, you know, like video ideas of gear, I want to take and how to like, make fun videos out in those areas. But as far as big, like multiple day trips, nothing in the works but you know, that's always something that That
[00:47:55] Bryce: will you know, it'll come up. I'm sure by you know this time next year I will have been out there somewhere. Are you
[00:48:03] Tayson: not doing a section of the Colorado Trail? This summer? It's not planned at least. Ah,
[00:48:10] Bryce: so yeah, the the group chat on that one kind of died. I think the guys are the other guys are probably pretty busy with their kids. They both had really young children now and honestly, I used up pretty much all my PTO from work. So,
[00:48:24] Tayson: no,
[00:48:25] Bryce: it's not only that because I can get off work if I need to. But, um, you know, it's, it's summertime everybody's taking Vacations. So I'm just gonna, you know, focus on doing some local stuff and I have like, a ton of video ideas right now that I'm gonna be working on that. Aren't necessarily, you know, trip videos but just fun little takes on, you know. Backpacking tips and stuff like that, like original ideas. I've been working on So yeah really just we're working on the channel, not necessarily doing you know, big mileage. But
[00:49:04] Tayson: We don't decide, we're gonna do section of the, the CT this summer. We're going to start in Durango and kind of go North North East. Oh, that's gonna do 100 miles section. There up towards Silverton. So, oh, that's cool.
[00:49:19] Bryce: That, that area looks. Bay Area. Looks pretty Epic.
[00:49:25] Tayson: I've been into the San Juan's a few times and they don't disappoint. So I'm excited. I probably had a little bit of a sway on starting off, but we'll see. I mean I don't think Colorado didn't get as much snow as Utah, but crossing our fingers. It's not too bad because that's some really high elevation. Country. So I'm sure you
[00:49:47] Bryce: living like where you do and hiking where you do way more, you know, what act, acclimated or, whatever to Elevation and I am but every time I go to Colorado it's like I mean, I love it out there, it's beautiful but man, it's hard hiking with a headache for five days straight. You know what I mean? Yeah, so it's like, I take
[00:50:10] Tayson: it, really. I got. I got elevation sick. One time and that was only at 10,000 feet, right? And so like where will be gone will be 12? I think there's probably even some 13 in there so if we were to do any of the Peaks around there, but anyways, like I take a really seriously because the one time I got really sick, Like we were like like 10,000 to me, like isn't even like, considered super high. I feel like, but really anything past. I think 8,000 is considered high elevation and and like, you can get, you can be filling it and so here. Yeah. We've super focused on getting some good sleep going into it and then hydration, we just like hyper. Oh yeah, hydration and those are like the two biggest things we've we've
[00:50:58] Tayson: found. But I'm sure it helps that we that we live a higher elevation and we can occasionally get up there but it's still reaches up and grabs a lot of people in our office and so we're pretty careful about it. Yeah.
[00:51:09] Bryce: I always try to watch my alcohol consumption to that. That Definitely watching go
[00:51:15] Tayson: down, you mean oh yeah, you make just
